Campaign has no one to send to: the audience matches nobody, or no contact is reachable

A campaign mails only active contacts that match its audience, have a valid email address and are not on the unsubscribe list. When nobody matches, or everyone matched is skipped, Send stays greyed out or is refused.

Messages this explains

  • “No contact matches the audience yet”
  • “No reachable recipient in the audience”
  • “No valid email address”
  • “Contact unsubscribed”
  • “This contact is already unsubscribed”
  • “validation error”
  • “Enter a valid email address.”
  • “Enter a valid email address”

Campaign has no one to send to: the audience matches nobody, or no contact is reachable

You are about to send a campaign and Send is greyed out, the send is refused, the preview finds nobody, or the recipient list is full of skipped rows.

What you see

On the campaign page:

  • Send is greyed out, with no reason on hover.
  • Preview for the first contact and Send test answer "No contact matches the audience yet".
  • Send now or Schedule answers "No reachable recipient in the audience".
  • On the Recipients card, rows are marked Skipped with "No valid email address" or Unsubscribed with "Contact unsubscribed", and the Skipped tile ("no email or unsubscribed") counts them.
  • Count audience shows "N reachable of M matched (N without email, N unsubscribed)." with a reachable count of 0.
  • Send test refuses an address that isn't a full email address: the Preview card shows only "validation error". The underlying reason, "Enter a valid email address.", is what a connected AI assistant reports for the same refusal.

On Unsubscribes, Unsubscribe a contact answers "This contact is already unsubscribed". On Contacts, the Email field answers "Enter a valid email address" when the address is not well formed.

Why it happens

A campaign's audience is a saved filter; the recipient list is a snapshot built from it, one row per contact. Only reachable contacts are mailed:

  • Matched: the contact is active and fits the audience (the source, Contact types, or Projects, Stages and Lead sources for contacts with an opportunity, plus Cities, the Added from / Added to dates and the text search). Inactive contacts are never included.
  • Has a valid email address: a contact with no email, or a malformed one, is Skipped with "No valid email address".
  • Not unsubscribed: anyone on the organization's unsubscribe list is marked Unsubscribed with "Contact unsubscribed". People who asked not to be mailed must stay out of every campaign.

"No contact matches the audience yet" means the filter finds nobody at all. "No reachable recipient in the audience" means it finds people, but every one of them is skipped or unsubscribed.

Send is greyed out whenever the saved list has no reachable recipient and you have no unsaved change. That includes a campaign whose list has never been built. Only an unsaved change lets you open the Send dialog, which then reads "The recipient list is built from the audience when you send."; if that list turns out to have nobody reachable, the send is refused with "No reachable recipient in the audience".

"This contact is already unsubscribed" simply means the person is on the list already; there is one entry per contact.

How to fix it

  1. Click Count audience to see how many contacts are matched, how many have no email and how many are unsubscribed.
  2. Nobody matched: widen the audience in the Audience card and click Save (the Edit permission on Campaigns). Untick filters that are too narrow, check the Cities spelling and the Added from / Added to dates, or switch the source between All contacts and Contacts with an opportunity (leads and buyers). Remember that the Project field in the details does not narrow the audience.
  3. Matched, but no email: add the missing addresses on Contacts (the Edit permission on Contacts). Check that inactive contacts you expect are really meant to be inactive.
  4. Matched, but unsubscribed: leave them out. Remove an entry on Unsubscribes with Remove unsubscribe only when the person has asked to receive mail again (the Edit permission on Campaigns).
  5. Click Build list (or Rebuild list after changing the audience or the contacts). The message "<n> reachable recipients (<n> skipped)." confirms the count, and Send lights up once the reachable count is above 0.
  6. Click Send (the Edit and send permissions on Campaigns).
  7. For Send test, type a full address such as "you@example.com".

A campaign's audience is a saved filter over contacts or leads; the recipient list is the snapshot built from it, one row per contact, skipping those without a valid email or on the organization's unsubscribe list, which the link in every mail adds to.

  • Add, edit and retire contactsHow-to

Keep the master list of people up to date: add a contact with their type, correct their details, retire a person who is no longer dealt with, and delete only a record nothing refers to.

  • Campaign cannot be changed, cancelled or deleted: its status, or the template does not fitTroubleshooting

Only a Draft or Scheduled campaign can be edited, rebuilt or sent; a campaign that has started sending is kept as the log of what went out; a finished or cancelled one can't be cancelled; and a campaign needs an Email template that renders a contact.
