Construction stage cannot be deleted: payment schedules reference it
A construction stage that installments on a booking's payment schedule are waiting on cannot be deleted; those schedule rows would lose the event that dates them.
Messages this explains
- “<n> payment schedule row(s) reference this stage”
- “Stages referenced by payment schedules cannot be deleted.”
- “That milestone belongs to a different project.”
Construction stage cannot be deleted: payment schedules reference it
You clicked the bin on a stage on the Construction Stages tab, confirmed Delete stage?, and the dialog refused.
What you see
On Construction Stages, the Delete stage? dialog already warns "<name> and its N files will be removed. Stages referenced by payment schedules cannot be deleted." When you press Delete on a stage that a payment schedule uses, the dialog shows "<n> payment schedule row(s) reference this stage" and the stage stays.
Why it happens
A construction-linked payment plan turns each stage into installments: "10% on plinth", "15% on the fifth slab". Every such installment on a booking's payment schedule points at the stage it waits for. When the stage is marked completed, those rows get their due date and the demand run bills them. Delete the stage and the rows would have no event to wait for, so the app refuses as soon as one schedule row anywhere in the project refers to the stage. The count in the message is the number of such rows, across every booking. (Member offers are not involved: their schedules are dated by calendar, never by a stage.)
Things the check does not cover:
- Stage links on the Unit Pricing tab (a charge group routed to this stage) do not block the delete. They are dropped silently when the stage goes, so check the plans' stage links afterwards.
- Payment plans on estimates that are not booked yet do not block the delete either. An estimate whose finalized construction-linked plan names the deleted stage can no longer be booked as it stands: Book answers "That milestone belongs to a different project." Give the estimate a new payment plan version without that stage.
- Files attached to the stage are removed with it, as the dialog says.
How to fix it
- Keep the stage. In almost every case that is the right answer: a stage that schedules depend on is part of the project's billing. If it was created by mistake, rename it or move it with the pencil (Edit, the Edit permission on Construction Stages), and give it a Share of total of 0 if it should not count towards progress.
- If it must go, first move the installments off it. Each referencing row lives on a booking's payment schedule: open the booking's Termsheet & schedule and use Regenerate schedule with a plan that no longer names this stage (the Edit permission on Bookings). Paid, waived and hand-edited rows are kept by a regenerate, so a stage with such rows keeps its references. Once no row references the stage, Delete goes through. Deleting needs the Delete permission on Construction Stages; in the default roles that is the Administrator and the Project Manager.
- After a delete, open Unit Pricing and check How each charge group is collected on each plan that pointed at the stage, then Save stage links if you change it. Check the payment plans of open estimates on the project as well.

- Construction stages and share bucketsConcept
A project's construction stages (plinth, slabs, possession) each carry a share of a 100% bucket, one bucket for the project-wide stages and one per tower; completing a stage dates the installments waiting on it and moves the revenue progress.
- Construction stage cannot be reopened or re-datedTroubleshooting
Reopen is refused once an installment on the stage has been paid, waived, cancelled or hand-dated; the commencement and completion dates must keep their order; and a stale screen can ask for a change the stage already has.
- Construction stage shares refused or the plan splits equally: shares must add up to 100%Troubleshooting
Project-wide stages share one 100% and each tower's own stages share their own; a share that pushes its bucket over 100% is refused, while shares that do not reach 100% make the pricing preview split the plan equally and leave revenue progress with nothing to measure.
