Demand or commission cannot be cancelled, edited or approved: payments are against it, or its status forbids
A demand with receipts, or a commission with payouts, cannot be cancelled until that money is bounced, cancelled or reallocated; and once issued or approved, the document's figures are fixed, so only a Draft demand or an Accrued commission can be edited or deleted.
Messages this explains
- “Money has been received against this demand; bounce or reallocate those payments first”
- “A pending payment is allocated to this demand; cancel or reallocate it first”
- “A TDS credit is recorded against demand <no>; cancel it under Payments > TDS credits first”
- “Demand is already cancelled”
- “Only a Draft demand can be edited; cancel it and raise a new one.”
- “A cancelled demand cannot be edited”
- “Only a Draft demand can be issued (this one is <status>)”
- “Some demands of this run are already issued; cancel those individually with credit notes.”
- “Money has been paid against this commission; bounce or reallocate those payments first”
- “A pending payout is allocated to this commission; cancel or reallocate it first”
- “Only an Accrued commission can be edited; cancel it and record a new one.”
- “Only an Accrued commission can be approved (this one is <status>)”
- “The net payable amount must be above zero.”
- “Receipt <no> is Pending; clear or cancel it first”
- “Payout <no> is Pending; clear or cancel it first”
Demand or commission cannot be cancelled, edited or approved: payments are against it, or its status forbids
You tried to cancel, edit, delete, issue or approve a demand or a commission, and the app refused because money is already recorded against it, or because the document is no longer in the status that allows the action.
What you see
On the Demand page:
- Cancel this demand? (Cancel it) fails with "Money has been received against this demand; bounce or reallocate those payments first" when a cleared receipt is allocated to it, "A TDS credit is recorded against demand <no>; cancel it under Payments > TDS credits first" when the buyer's TDS deposit has been recorded against it, or "A pending payment is allocated to this demand; cancel or reallocate it first" when a Pending receipt is. "Demand is already cancelled" means another user cancelled it while your page was open. A Paid demand has no Cancel demand button at all.
- Edit and Delete show only on a Draft demand. On a page opened before someone else issued or cancelled it, saving the Edit draft demand dialog or confirming Delete this draft? fails with "Only a Draft demand can be edited; cancel it and raise a new one.", or "A cancelled demand cannot be edited" when an edit meets a Cancelled one.
- Issue this demand? fails with "Only a Draft demand can be issued (this one is <status>)" when it was already issued or cancelled, usually from a run or by someone else.
On a Demand run, Cancel the run? fails with "Some demands of this run are already issued; cancel those individually with credit notes." This is common after an issue that partly failed: the run stays Draft with some demands already issued.
On the Commission page:
- Cancel this commission? fails with "Money has been paid against this commission; bounce or reallocate those payments first" (a cleared payout) or "A pending payout is allocated to this commission; cancel or reallocate it first" (a Pending payout). A Paid commission has no Cancel button at all.
- Edit and Delete show only on an Accrued commission. On a page opened before someone else approved it, saving or confirming Delete this commission? fails with "Only an Accrued commission can be edited; cancel it and record a new one."
- Approve this commission? fails with "Only an Accrued commission can be approved (this one is <status>)" on a stale page, or "The net payable amount must be above zero." when gross + GST − TDS comes to zero or less.
On the booking's Cancel booking wizard, the review step lists "Receipt <no> is Pending; clear or cancel it first" or "Payout <no> is Pending; clear or cancel it first" as blockers, and Next stays greyed out. The booking's Demands & money tab is where you reach these demands, receipts and commissions.
Why it happens
Issuing a demand posts a Sales voucher and opens a bill on the buyer's or member's ledger; approving a commission posts the accrual journal and opens the partner's bill. Posted vouchers are never edited, only reversed, so from that moment the figures are fixed: a demand can only be cancelled with a credit note that reverses the voucher and settles the bill, and a commission by reversing its journal. That is why edit and delete are limited to Draft demands and Accrued commissions, and why a demand can be issued only once.
A credit note can only settle a bill that nothing else has settled. Once a receipt is cleared against the demand, part of the bill is already paid by that receipt; reversing the demand alone would leave the buyer's money hanging. The app therefore asks you to bounce the receipt (which reverses its voucher and reopens the bill) or reallocate it first. A Pending receipt has not posted yet but has already earmarked the demand, so it must be cancelled or reallocated too. A TDS credit settles part of the bill in the same way, with its own Journal voucher against the demand's bill, so it has to be cancelled first (which reopens the bill by that amount). The same logic applies to payouts on a commission. The booking cancellation wizard handles paid demands itself by credit-noting them and turning the money into a credit owed to the buyer, which is why it insists that nothing be Pending before it starts.
"The net payable amount must be above zero." exists because approval opens a bill on the partner's ledger for the net amount; a bill for nothing has no meaning.
How to fix it
- Find the payments. On the demand's Receipts against this demand card (or the commission's Payouts card, or the booking's Demands & money tab) open each receipt or payout. Seeing them needs the View permission on Payments.
- Cleared money: on the Payment page press Bounce, give the date and a reason, Mark bounced. The voucher is reversed and the bill reopens. You need the Edit permission on Payments; in the default roles that is the Administrator, the Finance Lead and the Accountant. If the money was real and should stay, don't bounce it: use the booking's Cancel booking wizard instead (step 5), or leave the demand as it is.
- Pending money: on the payment press Edit and remove or change the allocation (reallocate), or Cancel it (Edit on Payments). To let the booking cancellation proceed instead, Mark cleared or Cancel every Pending receipt and payout it lists.
- A TDS credit: open it from the demand's TDS credits against this demand card (or under Payments > TDS credits) and press Cancel credit, then Cancel credit again in "Cancel this TDS credit?" (the Edit permission on Payments). You see "TDS credit <no> cancelled; the demand's bill is open again by <amount>." If the deposit was real and the deal stands, don't cancel it: leave the demand as it is.
- Then cancel the document: Cancel demand > Cancel it on the demand (the Edit permission on Demands), or Cancel > Cancel it on the commission (Edit on Commissions). An issued demand gets a credit note dated the cancellation date; its schedule rows are free for a new demand.
- To cancel the whole deal, use Cancel booking on the booking header, which credit-notes every demand, including paid ones, and creates the refund. Finishing it needs the Edit permission on Bookings, the Edit permission on Demands and the Create permission on Payments together; in the default roles only the Administrator holds all three.
- To change an issued demand, cancel it (step 5) and Raise demand again on the booking's Demands & money tab or the offer (the Create permission on Demands); an issued demand accepts no change (one issued before 10 October 2026 still takes its Form 16B details). To change an approved commission, cancel it and Accrue commission again (Create on Commissions).
- For a run with some demands issued, cancel or keep those demands one by one on their own pages; the run's Cancel run is only for runs where nothing posted. To finish the run, fix what failed and press Issue <n> demands again (see Demand run: some demands could not be issued).
- For a zero net payable, press Edit on the Accrued commission and correct Base amount, Basis, Gross (override), GST on brokerage or TDS rate so the estimate's net payable is above zero, then Approve again.
- If the message says the document is already cancelled or already issued, reload the page; the action was done elsewhere.

When a flat's consideration reaches the threshold, the buyer withholds 1% of every installment and deposits it with the Income Tax department instead of paying it to the developer; NirmaanOne bills the buyer the full total, shows the expected TDS and what is payable in money, and books the withheld tax only when the buyer's deposit (Form 16B / 26QB) is recorded as a TDS credit.
