"The 'Tenant' contact type is not configured": a lookup or component the app relies on is missing

A form refused to save because a standard lookup value (a contact type such as Tenant, Customer or Lead) or the GST charge component the app looks up by itself is no longer in your organization; an administrator adds it back under Lookups or Charge Components and the form saves.

Messages this explains

  • “The 'Tenant' contact type is not configured. Ask an administrator to add it under Lookups.”
  • “Contact type '<CODE>' is not configured”
  • “Nothing to choose from.”
  • “No active Tax charge component (GST) exists to schedule the GST rows”

"The 'Tenant' contact type is not configured": a lookup or component the app relies on is missing

You filled in a form correctly and it still refused to save, naming a contact type that "is not configured", or a dropdown offers nothing at all, or a booking refuses because no GST component exists. The app was looking for a standard value that every organization starts with, and it is gone.

What you see

  • "The 'Tenant' contact type is not configured. Ask an administrator to add it under Lookups." appears in the form banner whenever a screen creates a contact on the fly with a type it picks itself and that type is missing:

    • New opportunity, when you enter a new person rather than picking an existing contact (the Lead type).
    • The member and co-owner forms on Society and Society & Tenants, and the Excel import of members (the Tenant type).
    • The co-applicant forms on Applicants & parking and in the booking wizard (the Customer type).
    • Attaching a new person to a company on Company (the Vendor type, or Channel Partner for a channel-partner company).
    • The panel on Bank accounts, in the rare case that the chosen purpose does not belong to your organization.

The wording always says 'Tenant', whichever type is really missing. The message the server itself gives, "Contact type '<CODE>' is not configured", names the real one (LEAD, CUSTOMER, TENANT, VENDOR or CHANNEL_PARTNER); you see that text only when the AI assistant relays it.

  • "Nothing to choose from." sits under an audience checklist on New campaign and the Campaign editor under Contact types or Lead sources when that lookup has no active value, or when you lack the View permission on Lookups.

  • "No active Tax charge component (GST) exists to schedule the GST rows" appears when the estimate carries GST but no active Tax charge component exists to put the GST rows on. You meet it first as a warning in place of the schedule preview on the estimate's payment plan (Edit estimate, Estimate) and in the booking wizard, and again in the wizard's banner when you press Book.

Why it happens

A new organization is seeded with six contact types (Lead, Customer, Tenant, Vendor, Channel Partner, User), the standard lead sources, activity types, company types, bank account purposes, and the charge components including GST, the one Tax component. Some screens do not ask you for a type: when a sales executive types a new buyer into an opportunity, the app files the person as a Lead; a society member becomes a Tenant; a co-applicant a Customer. The app finds these values by their code, so they must exist in your organization's lookups.

A contact type is found by its code even when it is inactive, so the message means the row has been deleted (possible only while no contact uses it) or was never created for this organization.

The GST case is different: the booking builds the schedule's GST rows on an active Tax component, preferring the one coded GST, so a deactivated GST component blocks bookings even though it still sits on existing plans.

"Nothing to choose from." is simply an empty list: the lookup has no active rows, or your role cannot read lookups.

How to fix it

  1. Open Settings > Lookups and the Contact types tab. Tick Show inactive to make sure the value is really missing rather than retired.
  2. Press New contact type, type the Name and Add contact type. The code is made from the name, and it must match what the app looks for: "Tenant" gives TENANT, "Customer" gives CUSTOMER, "Lead" gives LEAD, "Vendor" gives VENDOR, "Channel Partner" gives CHANNEL_PARTNER. You need the Create permission on Lookups; in the default roles that is the Administrator, the Finance Lead, the Project Manager, the Sales Manager and the Rehab Officer.
  3. If the value exists but is inactive and a dropdown reads "Nothing to choose from.", open it with the pencil, tick Active and Save changes (the Edit permission on Lookups). If you cannot see the lookups at all, ask an administrator for the View permission on Lookups in Roles & Permissions.
  4. For the GST message, open Masters > Charge Components, tick Show inactive, open GST and tick Active, then Save changes. If no Tax component exists at all, press New component, set Kind to Tax, name it GST and press Add component. You need the Edit (or Create) permission on Charge Components; in the default roles that is the Administrator and the Finance Lead.
  5. Go back to the form and save it again; nothing was written the first time. The schedule preview refreshes on its own once the GST component is active.
