Commission cannot be accrued: no basis or gross, no channel partner, or an allottee purchase

A channel-partner commission needs a partner and an amount it can work out: type a basis percent or a gross amount, or pick a partner company whose default commission percent fills the basis; an allottee buying their own allotted unit never earns a commission.

Messages this explains

  • “Give a basis percent or a gross amount (or a partner with a default percent)”
  • “Give gross_amount, or basis_percent (or a channel partner with a default commission percent)”
  • “The booking has no channel partner; pick the partner company or contact.”
  • “The opportunity has no channel partner; pick one when accruing.”
  • “An allottee buying their allotted unit earns no channel partner commission”

Commission cannot be accrued: no basis or gross, no channel partner, or an allottee purchase

You pressed Accrue commission on a booking (or Save changes on an accrued commission) and the app refused because it cannot tell how much to accrue, does not know whom to pay, or the booking is an allottee taking up their own allotted unit.

What you see

On the booking's Demands & money tab, the Channel-partner commission card reads "Partner on the opportunity: <company>." or "The opportunity has no channel partner; pick one when accruing." Pressing Accrue commission opens "Accrue commission on <booking no>", where:

  • the Basis field shows "Give a basis percent or a gross amount (or a partner with a default percent)" when Basis, Gross (override) and Partner company are all empty;
  • the banner shows "Give gross_amount, or basis_percent (or a channel partner with a default commission percent)" when Basis and Gross (override) are empty and the Partner company (filled in from the opportunity, or picked by you) has no Default commission percent, so there is nothing to multiply;
  • the banner shows "The booking has no channel partner; pick the partner company or contact." when you left Partner company and Partner contact (optional) empty on a booking whose opportunity has no channel partner;
  • the banner shows "An allottee buying their allotted unit earns no channel partner commission" when the booking belongs to a society member, landowner or PAP tenant buying their allotted unit.

On the Commission page, Edit > Save changes can show the same "Give gross_amount, or basis_percent…" message on a commission that was recorded with a gross amount only: the edit recomputes gross from base × basis, and a commission with no basis and a partner without a default percent has nothing to recompute from.

Why it happens

A commission is brokerage owed to the channel partner who brought the buyer. Accruing it opens a liability, so the app needs two things settled: who is paid, and how much. The amount is base × basis (the base defaults to the booking's agreed total), or a gross you type; a partner company's Default commission fills the basis when you type none. If none of the three is available, the gross would be undefined, so the accrual is refused rather than posted at zero.

The partner defaults to the one on the opportunity; a booking that came in without a partner has nobody to pay until you name one, so the accrual asks for the company or contact.

An allottee's purchase is not a sale a broker sourced: the member, landowner or PAP tenant takes up the unit allotted under their offer, and their booking is tied to that offer. No channel partner commission can arise on it, whoever is recorded on the opportunity.

How to fix it

  1. Type an amount. In "Accrue commission on <booking no>", enter Basis (a percent of the Base amount) or Gross (override), and press Accrue commission. You need the Create permission on Commissions; in the default roles that is the Administrator and the Finance Lead. Editing an accrued commission needs the Edit permission on Commissions (also the Accountant).
  2. Or give the partner a default. Open the partner company on Company, press Edit, fill Default commission (%) and save (the Edit permission on Companies). Back on the booking, pick that company under Partner company (the opportunity's partner is already filled in) and leave Basis empty: the default percent is applied when the commission is accrued (the edit panel of an accrued commission then shows it as the Basis hint, "Partner default <n>%.").
  3. Name the partner. In the accrual form choose Partner company (searching needs the View permission on Companies; without it the panel says "Searching companies needs the Companies permission; the booking's partner is used.") or Partner contact (optional) (shown with the View permission on Contacts). To make it the default for the booking, record the channel partner on the opportunity with Edit opportunity (the Edit permission on Opportunities); the card then shows "Partner on the opportunity: <company>." and the form defaults to it.
  4. For an allottee's booking, there is nothing to fix: the message is final. If a partner really is owed something on that deal, record it outside the commission flow, for example as a voucher agreed with your accountant.
  5. For the edit case, type the Basis the commission was meant to carry (or the same Gross (override) again) before Save changes; the estimate on the form shows the resulting gross, GST, TDS and net so you can check it.
