Society cannot be deleted: projects link it or members exist

A society stays on file while any project is linked to it or any member is recorded under it; unlink it from every project and remove its members first, and a society whose members already have offers cannot be deleted at all.

Messages this explains

  • “Society cannot be deleted: linked projects, tenants”
  • “Society cannot be deleted: linked projects”
  • “Society cannot be deleted: linked tenants”

Society cannot be deleted: projects link it or members exist

You pressed the bin on a society on the Societies list, and the app refused to delete it.

What you see

The confirmation "Delete society?" already warns: "<name> will be removed. Societies linked to a project or holding members cannot be deleted." When you click Delete, the dialog shows one of:

  • "Society cannot be deleted: linked projects, tenants": at least one project is linked to the society, and at least one member is recorded under it.
  • "Society cannot be deleted: linked projects": a project is linked to it.
  • "Society cannot be deleted: linked tenants": members are recorded under it. "Tenants" here means the society's members.

The Societies list shows both in its columns: the Projects column has a badge for each linked project, and Members counts the members recorded. The Society page shows the same as badges under its name and in Members recorded.

Why it happens

A society on a redevelopment project is the body whose members give consent, receive offers and are rehabilitated in the new building. The project's Society & Tenants tab, its offers and its member parking slots all hang off that link, and every member record belongs to the society. Deleting the society would orphan those records, so the app only deletes a society that no project uses and that has no members left. The usual case for a delete is a society entered by mistake or twice.

How to fix it

  1. Unlink it from every project. Click each badge in the Projects column to open the project, go to its Society & Tenants tab and click Unlink on the Society card (or Change to link the right society instead). It happens at once, with no confirmation, and you see "Society unlinked." This needs the Edit permission on Projects; in the default roles the Administrator, the Project Manager and the Compliance Officer have it. Check the project's offers card first: unlinking doesn't check for offers already made to the society's members.
  2. Remove the members. Open the Society page, open each member with the pencil on the members grid and click Delete, then Delete again in "Delete member?". This needs the Delete permission on Tenants (in the default roles the Administrator and the Rehab Officer). A member who has an offer, even a cancelled one, or a parking slot cannot be deleted until the offer is deleted and the parking slot released; see Member or allottee cannot be deleted. A member whose offer has money or demands recorded can never be deleted, and so neither can the society.
  3. Delete the society from the Societies list with the bin (hover "Delete <name>"). This needs the Delete permission on Societies; in the default roles the Administrator, the Project Manager and the Rehab Officer have it.

If the society is real and in use, keep it. To correct its name, registration number or address, use the pencil on the list or Edit on the society's page instead.
