Company cannot be deleted: projects, opportunities, bank accounts or books link to it

A company that is a project's promoter, a channel partner on an opportunity or commission, the owner of bank accounts or the entity of a set of books can't be deleted, so deals and postings stay traceable. Untick Active instead.

Messages this explains

  • “Company cannot be deleted: linked <blockers>”
  • “That conflicts with existing data.”

Company cannot be deleted: projects, opportunities, bank accounts or books link to it

You clicked Delete on a company and confirmed Delete company?, and the dialog refused.

What you see

In the Delete company? dialog, opened from the company page or the trash icon on Companies:

  • "Company cannot be deleted: linked <blockers>", where <blockers> names what still refers to the company, for example "Company cannot be deleted: linked projects, bank accounts, accounting books". The possible blockers are projects, opportunities, bank accounts and accounting books.
  • "That conflicts with existing data." when a channel-partner commission names the company.

The dialog warns in advance: "<name> and its attached contacts will be removed. A company used as a promoter, channel partner, bank-account holder or accounting entity cannot be deleted; deactivate it instead." Despite the wording, only the attachments go: the people attached to the company stay on Contacts and simply lose their link to it.

Why it happens

A company is referred to by records that must keep their party, so the app refuses to pull it out from under them:

Blocker What refers to the company
projects It is the promoter entity of a project.
opportunities It is the channel partner on an opportunity.
bank accounts It owns bank accounts (collection, RERA separate, operative, GST and so on).
accounting books It keeps a set of books.
(conflict message) It is the channel partner on a commission.

Deleting it would leave projects without a promoter, opportunities and commissions without the partner who brought them, and a set of books and its postings without the entity that keeps them. This keeps deals and postings traceable for audit.

How to fix it

  1. Deactivate instead of deleting. Open Edit company, untick Active and save (the Edit permission on Companies). The company keeps its history and is left out of the company pickers on other screens. This is the right answer in almost every case.
  2. Only if the company was linked by mistake, remove the links, then delete it (the Delete permission on Companies):
    • a project that names it as Promoter entity: pick the right promoter on Edit project (the Edit permission on Projects);
    • an opportunity that names it as Channel partner: change or clear it on Edit opportunity (the Edit permission on Opportunities);
    • its bank accounts: delete them under Bank accounts; an account with payments against it can only be deactivated;
    • its books, or a commission naming it as channel partner: these hold postings, so the company stays. Deactivate it.
