Greyed-out buttons

Why a button is grey and can't be clicked, where to read the reason, and why some buttons are missing altogether.

Greyed-out buttons

Sometimes a button is grey and nothing happens when you click it. That means the action can't go ahead yet. The app tells you why, so you can fix the cause and try again.

Where to find it

Anywhere in the app. The rules below apply to every screen.

What you see

  • A greyed-out button looks flat and grey, whatever colour it normally is, and the pointer shows it can't be clicked.
  • The reason on hover. Rest the mouse on the grey button and a tooltip explains what is missing, for example "Choose a filled-in sheet first" or "Save your changes first".
  • An alert on the page. Where the block comes from the record itself (a rule it breaks, a setup step that is missing), the page also says so in an alert near the top, often with a link to fix it. The booking wizard, for instance, lists every reason the booking can't go ahead and repeats them on the grey Continue and Book buttons.

Some examples you may meet:

Where Button Reason on hover
Excel import dialog Import "Choose a filled-in sheet first", "Fix the N rows listed below, then choose the file again", "This sheet has no rows to add or update"
Connecting an AI assistant Allow "Your organization has not turned on AI connectors. An administrator can allow them under Settings > Organization."
Offer panel Issue "Save your changes first"
Offer panel benefit plan "Benefit plans need the Pricing permission"
Demand lines appropriate "Nothing has been received against this demand yet", "Appropriating needs permission to update demands"
Booking cancellation add a charge "Nothing was billed or received, so there is nothing to charge against"
Project readiness Sync bank ledgers "Creating the ledgers needs permission to edit projects"
Benefit plans save "Give the plan a name", "A benefit appears twice", "Nothing changed"
Booking possession offer possession, hand over "Record the occupation certificate on the tower or the project first", "Offer possession first"
Booking wizard Continue, Book Every blocker the page lists, joined with " · "

Each screen's own article lists its reasons in full.

What you can do

  1. Hover the grey button and read the reason.
  2. Read the alert on the page, if there is one.
  3. Fix what it asks for (save your changes, finish a setup step, choose a file), then try again.
  4. If the reason is about a permission, ask your administrator to give you the permission named.

Things to know

  • A missing button usually means a missing permission. Most buttons are hidden, not greyed out, when you don't hold the permission for them. If a colleague sees a button you don't, compare your roles.
  • A few buttons are greyed out without a tooltip. On the notifications bell and page, Mark all read is grey when nothing is unread. In the task panel, Save changes is grey until you change something. After you turn on two-factor authentication, Done is grey until you tick "I have saved these codes somewhere safe". The Regenerate and Disable buttons of the two-factor dialogs are grey until you have typed your password (and the code), and Allow and Deny are grey while an AI connection is being answered.
  • A button that shows a spinner is busy, not blocked. Wait for it to finish.
